It’s about 1:20am in Sydney while I’m writing this because I thought: “Oh shit, graduation is soon!” And I remembered how I am a “dick” and that I won’t get to see your lovely faces walk out through the castle gates at Stevens. To be honest, I don’t even know what day graduation…
But anyway, I’m super-duper excited for all of you. You’re brilliant people and have accomplished brilliant things. Many of you have become some of my closest friends and it’s terrible to think that I’m going to have to deal with another year at school without you guys. I know most of you aren’t going too far and I’ll probably see you sometime soon anyway, but it’s still a big change.
After graduation, you’ll be stepping into the next part of your life. It’s scary, but if you think about it, Stevens has prepared you well. Why? Because Stevens has taught you two things: (1) The world sucks and (2) How to survive the suckage and be awesome.
So when you walk out of those gates, walk down the procession, and receive your diploma, proceed to stare life in the face, tell it to kiss your ass, and strut your swagger as you sit back in your seat and wait for the other few hundred students to get their diplomas. You’re awesome.

So I’ve noticed that I don’t smile as often as I think I do. It’s not like I’m frowning, I just tend to have a smug “I can’t be arsed” face on wherever I go. Granted, I smile a lot more when I’m around friends and people I like and, for the most part, the people I encounter on a daily basis who are not my friends are probably dumb, scum of the Earth types. So they deserve my facade of indifference.
But that’s not how you attract new people. I’m all for meeting new people and my “I’m a dick” face doesn’t really help in that. So, in a pact to myself, I’m going to smile more. That’s right, world—you’re going to be overdosed with my beautiful, shining Asian face 24/7. I’m even going to tape my face in a smile while I sleep.
Lady who I pass on the street—you get a smile! Bus driver? Smile! Small children running around in the park? Smile for you all! Guy next to me at the urinal? I got a smile for you too!
And, if this doesn’t attract more people to me, then I’ll be cutting some holes into a brown paper bag.
